One
of the challenges of the renovation and expansion of the ARFF building
was to redesign the existing steel-framed building to an all-concrete
structure. Due to the corrosive environment of the airport close
to the shoreline, CPA specifically required the reduction of the use of
steel wherever possible. The new 4-lane vehicle bay is a
cast-in-place concrete structure spanning 54 feet. This expanded
vehicle bay is an interior space clear of any columns to enable maximum
mobility of vehicles. Aluminum and stainless steel were specified
for most building components throughout, such as the 48ft wide bi-fold
doors, roll-up doors, turnout gear lockers, benches, gratings, and wire
mesh partitions.
EFC utilized the latest CAD technology, implmenting a "Building
Information Modeling" (BIM) drafting software, which enabled complete
3D visualization throughout the design process.
